Voice Over

The secrets to making a good voice over show reel are simple. First we should remember that a Show Reel should never be used to impress your friends or amuse the family, it's designed to get you work.

The first stage is to discuss and choose the best material to suit your age and style of voice. The key thing to remember is that we are sending it to a professional casting director or producer who probably doesn't know you at all, imagine you're them, what will they expect to hear?

-That you can promote a concept or product in such a style as to increase brand awareness, and that you are confident in front of the microphone or camera.

You should also consider developing your own style, and think about types of products a voice of your age could sell. A voice that sounds 30-40 years of age wouldn't necessarily be used to advertise spot cream unless it was from an ironic point of view.

Scripts

Most Professional studios will have a library of scripts for you to try. But in the mean time you should think about finding your own material. Relax with a newspaper or magazine and read the adverts. Think about the products or services your voice suits the best.

Narration

This should be descriptive in nature. Have a look at articles in magazines or a quality Sunday supplement. In fact anything that's well written that can paint a picture for the listener. Choose a piece that says something about you! Or you could go for something that's been written especially for TV.

Vocal Tone

A list of adjectives that describe the tonal quality of voice.
Authoritive, Camp, Confident, Energetic, Fresh, Husky, Gravely, Light, Natural, Rich, Smooth, Soft, Soft, Sultry, Warm.
Native dialects and strong accents capture a listener's imagination. In general you should stick to your own neutral or regional dialect still, if you have a passion for accents then why not! Your Demo should be a reflection of you and your strengths.

Vocal Style

Think what style of delivery best enhances the campaign. Does a character voice get the message across more effectively? Take your cue from the advert itself. Thousands of pounds will have been spent trying to capture the right image.

We know what producers expect

Quality Photographs and Audio Show reel can provide broadcast executives with a more informed and professional impression of you before an assignment is offered.

For those wishing to pursue a career as a ‘Voice over Artist’ or ‘Actor’, we recommend, and can help prepare professionally written scripts for you to present in the studio. This combined with a sound engineer’s creative effects and recorded under Transmission quality conditions can produce ‘sound bites’ suitable for broadcast or promotional purposes.

It’s crucial that a show reel is produced in exactly the same way, as the industry would produce a television or Radio Commercial ‘the real thing’- in essence.
